Vintage Valentine Desserts

My masterpieces are usually made in the kitchen!  Hope you enjoy this post of vintage desserts.  This is an apple butter pie a peach upside down cake and a jelly roll!  The photos were part of my "Made at Home" newspaper column a couple years ago, but I
thought I'd post them ... They are such pretty Valentine desserts!

Tablescape Thursday - Japanese BBQ

I posted a Chinese New Year tablescape last week using my Corelle "Cherry Blossom" dinnerware!  Thought I'd share a post from last summer ... using the same dinnerware for an outdoor Japanese BBQ!  (I'm actually not a fan of Corelle ... but loved this pattern!)  I'm linking to Sunday Favorites, so make sure you click through the meme on the left to visit the party!

From June 2010

We recently celebrated the birthdays of two of the guys in our circle of friends ... with a Japanese BBQ on our deck. Our meal began with Rumaki, Salmon Sushi and Coconut Shrimp Pastries ... then we moved on ... to a wonderful pear salad, grilled Teriaki Beef Filets with stir fried vegetables and rice dumplings! We poured a little hot sake and enjoyed a birthdy cake decorated with two of their favorite things ... golf and the Rotary logo! One turned 78 and the other turned 80!

Valentine First Dinner Party!

Here's the full view of our first Valentine dinner of the season!  I pulled out all my Depression Glass Cape Cod stemmed glassware to use with a set of Cheryl Madden china.  I've been looking at this china patter (JCPenny) for three years ... thinking it would make a fantastic Valentine setting ... and finally bought it.  I'd call it very, very inexpensive ... but I'll happily set it alongside my Spode or Noritake anytime!

Here's a better view of the glassware.  I love it ... It can look fancy ... or a little country! Works with lots of settings.

The red heart-shaped plates came from Hobby Lobby ... the black rim made them a perfect match for this tablecloth that came from TJMaxx.  The tablecovering may seem a little non-traditional for Valentines Day ... but it has a bird in the print ... and I equate birds with St. Valentine.  He thought that birds found their mates in mid February ... thus the date he chose to secretly marry young couples.  I'm not crazy about my gold flatware because I find it difficult to clean (not nearly as easy as polishing silverplate) .. .but it works best with this china!

The candlelite views are pretty special!  I made the centerpiece with silk roses and light gold hydrangeas.  The basket I used actually has a hinged lid,  but I just propped it open!

Q is for Quail!

Q is for quail ... at our house.  Here's a little picture collage and a really good recipe!

Red Pepper Jelly Glazed Quail

Prepare this sauce to glaze 4 – 6 quail. Mix ½ cup of red pepper jelly with 3 Tablespoons of bourbon and a drop of
Worcestershire sauce.

Salt and pepper the quail and place them in a 325 degree oven. Roast them for 30 minutes, then begin glazing them with the sauce every 10 minutes. Continue roasting for 30 more minutes (total of one hour). In the last 10 minutes, add 1 cup hot water to the bottom of the pan. Let the quail rest on your serving platter and make a sauce by adding ¼ cup of red pepper jelly to the pan drippings. Pour over quail when serving.

Is It The Year of the Pig??

Did I say the year of the Pig?   This cute little pig cake was one of the many gifts given to my daughter when she visited Taiwan last summer.   She was visiting with prospective college students and exchanging small gifts was delightful!  She gave me this little piggy tucked inside a towel, because I love pigs.

No, it's not the year of the pig ... it's the year of the Rabbit and according to those who know these things ... in the next year, we will be setting more elegant tables ... we'll be more relaxed and calm ... and we'll spend more time enjoying the finer things of life that we've put on hold during this past year.

I've set up a cute dessert buffet table using one of my garden rabbits as the focal point!  I'm using my Corelle Cherry Blossom dinnerware with faux bamboo forks.  I bought a ton of silk cherry blossom stems last summer when I used this pattern on the deck for a Chinese BBQ ... and I've loved using it in other ways.

A little curly stem to go with the silk flowers ... and my Geisha (which is actually Japanese) that Big Daddy's uncle brought back during World War II.  The print is another little gift that traveling PhD Daughter shared with me. (PhD Dughter teaches Tourism Management at Southern Illinois University and is responsible for recruiting International students.)

Duck in Flight!

If you are lucky enough to have a husband who looks through his sportsman's catalog ... sees dinnerware ... and buys it for you ... you might have twelve placesettings of this pretty JQ Outdoors ironstone ... like me!  We love wildlife ... we enjoy eating wild game ... but we also enjoy watchable wildlife.   So ... I have more than one set of dinnerware that features scenes from Mother Nature.  This particular set has a reproduction of an original piece by German artist Robert Schmidt.  That makes using the dinnerware even more fun.  We collect wildlife prints and paintings, so discussion of an artist's work is great dinner conversation!
Here's the placesetting ... complete with a little glare!   I love to add pops of color in wintertime tables and I also love a clean look ... especially after all the clutter and excess I use at Christmastime!  The lime green charger and bright teal stemmed glass are both deliberate attempts to add that pop!

Some of the special pieces in this setting are the glassess ... mismatched, but that's my style!  The gold glasses are a recent TJM purchase .. the blue from a local antique store ... and the clear came from GW!  The bread and butter plates ... and knives ... also add an interesting element to the setting.  The colored handles on the knives brighten up each place setting.  You can see the full set in the following collage.  This is actually a set of cheese plates and knives.  I bought them years ago ... still in the dusty box ... at the Red Wing Angique Mall ... while visiting Red Wing, Minnesota!
The centerpiece is a combination of several duck decoys.  I love boxes and save husband's wooden cigar boxes.  They are handy for lots of things and look great in a masculine tablescape!  I often extend a composed centeriece out to the place setting.  Notice the small ducks at the head of each setting.  Be careful doing this, though ... don't let guests assume these little pieces are "favors"!

SIDE NOTE:  When Alzheimer's first hit my mother ... she was confused by my tables!  She'd see something she liked and put it in her pocket.  I just let her do it ... I would take it back later ... or not worry about it.  After my parents passed  away and we cleaned out their house ... I found all kinds of things that had originally been in a tablescape at my house!  Mother had a dresser drawer that she stored "valuables" in.  Tucked down in the corner, under some crocheted handkerchieves, I found a little ceramic rabbit that had originally been on an Easter table at my house.  It was certainly not valuable or even collectible, but to Mother ... it was meaningful.  If you have a loved one with Alzheimer's, don't swet the small stuff.  There is plenty to worry about without getting excited over things that don't really matter.

Here's one more look at the dinnerware.  The flatware is Sabatier and the yellow/gold flecked handles perfectly match the rim of the plates.

And special thanks to SJ for hosting this wonderful party!

Fancy Frugal Dessert

This really is an inexpensive dessert to make and it goes a long way.  If you want to dress it up, you can ... but you still don't have to spend a fortune.  Instead of adding fresh berries ... try whatever you have in the fridge ... maybe fresh citrus ... or just a little chocolate syrup.  You can thin almost any kind of jam or jelly with a little warm water and turn it into a sauce ... or a drizzle of honey does the trick!

I've posted this before ... but thought I'd offer it as a possible Valentine Day easy and inexpensive treat!

Almond Gooey Cake

A bite of this easy cake is just like a bite of a Chinese almond cookie, topped with cheesecake! Make the crust by blending one yellow cake mix (dry) with one stick of room temperature butter and one egg. Press the crust into the bottom of a prepared 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Make the topping by blending together 8 ounces of room temperature cream cheese, 2 eggs, 1 box of confectioner’s sugar and 1 ½ teaspoon of almond extract. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Cool to room temperature before serving with fresh berries and whipped cream. For valentines day, cut the pieces with a heart shaped cookie cutter!   This easily makes 12 servings ... or more!
